The Worth of Diamond
Beside the fountain, Zach kissed his girlfriend on the cheek. Sara smiled. While she watched the spray, he fumbled in a pocket and dropped to a knee.
“Sara, marry me?”
The diamond ring he held sparkled in the sun.
She shook her head. “I can’t.”
Zach’s hand trembled. “Then what was this? Us?”
“I never said I love you.”
“But I did!”
“I won’t argue with you.” She drew her hand from his and turned her back.
Zach stood and watched her go. Alone, he faced the fountain and threw in the ring.
The Meta-Story: I forgot I had 200 words to work with and had a hard enough time coming up with 100 words. In my first attempt, a man killed himself accidentally. Very depressing. This one was not much happier. I decided to quit while I was ahead.
