Shades of Blue
Shana stared glassy-eyed at the bottom of the bunk above hers. Memories held at bay by rho swirled toward the surface as the drug’s effects waned. Tragic images quickened her pulse. She roused herself off the bunk, noted the one above was empty, and gazed out the cabin’s porthole. She should dress, eat, report for duty. None of those necessities challenged the memories streaming through her mind or outweighed her need to forget. Shana turned from the starry view toward her footlocker, pulled the hidden drug kit from the false bottom, and injected. One more day then she’d quit.

So is the thinking of all addicts — I’ll quit tomorrow! Great take on the prompt! Very powerful.

Such a weird coincidence that this relates to a comment in the post I read before this one as people shared memories of their mothers (kind of a belated Mother’s Day post). The last one I read was from a woman whose mother was an addict, something she in turn struggled with for most of her life, but she’s now been sober for seven years.
Out of all the random topics and story lines people could write about, and take that on top of who I follow and in which order they post. I’m amazed when there’s a link between posts I read. Especially since the last post comes from someone who normally writes poetry, and I wouldn’t say this story is in your norm either.
Anyway, I don’t know what you do with that information, but I had to share it with someone.
I liked your take on this photo prompt, starting with the title. Well done.

Makes me look at the photo prompt a whole new way. A lot of insight into how pain can feed addictive behavior packed into a small package.

I read all the stories each week for this panel and two others, which takes quite a bit of time. I try to click the like button, at least, and sometimes leave comments. The stories on blogger, unfortunately, don’t have a button to click and require me to sign in each time. But I am reading over there even though unable to conveniently respond. 🙂
