Words with Wings

Jacqueline snapped her papers to hide her shaking. “I’ll keep this short.”

Lystra, her inquisitor, nodded toward Jacqueline’s massive thesis. “That would amaze me.”

“I…I…” Jacqueline blinked at letters dancing on her paper. “Oops!” She wiggled her fingers to make them behave, but they sprouted wings and swarmed like gnats. As she flailed tiny letters from her eyes and ears, her papers scattered.

“Help!”

Lystra stood and swished the tip of her wand. “Obey!”

The letters dropped to the flagstone floor. Jacqueline collected her papers, but they were blank.

“Never mind,” Lystra said. “Try again in a century.”
