The Worth of Diamond
Beside the fountain, Zach kissed his girlfriend on the cheek. Sara smiled. While she watched the spray, he fumbled in a pocket and dropped to a knee.
“Zach—”
“Sara, marry me?”
The diamond ring he held sparkled in the sun.
She shook her head. “I can’t.”
Zach’s hand trembled. “Then what was this? Us?”
“I never said I love you.”
“But I did!”
“I won’t argue with you.” She drew her hand from his and turned her back.
Zach stood and watched her go. Alone, he faced the fountain and threw in the ring.
The Meta-Story: I forgot I had 200 words to work with and had a hard enough time coming up with 100 words. In my first attempt, a man killed himself accidentally. Very depressing. This one was not much happier. I decided to quit while I was ahead.

Wow, he’s gutsy, proposing before she even says the L word — gutsy or, well, I hate to say “stupid” about a guy who just got his heart broken, so maybe I’ll follow your lead and stop before I get even more depressing. 🙂

I had a couple theories. Either he heard what he wanted to hear or he wasn’t listening. He could have just been stupid.
Thanks for reading, Joy.

Thanks for allowing us a ringside view (pun intended) of this farce. Well written, Kecia.

Poor guy, or foolish guy. Still, better she was honest with him now than later.

I think he assumed that if he loved her, she must feel the same about him, even if the signs were contrary to this belief. I think people only see what they want to see. They only accept the evidence that supports their own views. I like the idea behind this flash fiction story, Kecia. Someone should really go get that ring though. 😀

He definitely needs to get that ring. He may hate it now, but he’ll change his mind a couple years down the road! Thanks for reading, Mandie.

His biggest mistake was asking someone to marry him. Everyone knows marriage is just a prison sentence lol.
Good story Kecia. At least he survived this time. Maybe broken hearted, but still alive.

If I was him I’d certainly get that ring back. He’s not acting rationally because he’s upset. He also wasn’t acting rationally when he asked her to marry him so soon. She had every right to say no. He seems immature and needs to grow up emotionally. A diamond isn’t worthless. I can’t help being practical and he can sell it and use the money for something else. Good writing, Kecia. 🙂 — Suzanne
