Late with Payment
I stalked the port till he went alone for a smoke. With a carving knife, I stabbed him twice from behind in the kidney area, and waited for the effect. His mouth formed a silent O, and his eyes glazed. Shock. Internal hemorrhage. He bled on my hand; I should have worn gloves. He reeked of sweat and piss.
Never leave the weapon at the scene. Bad enough they have the body. I rolled him off the dock to buy time, shoved my bloody hands and knife in my hoodie pocket, and walked. Union paid 50k and waived my dues.

A union for murders? Why not? In ancient times there were assassin’s guilds.

Dear Kecia,
That was brutal. Obviously the killer is experienced. I wouldn’t know where to stab to hit behind the kidney. Well done.

Rochelle

Brutal, that’s one way for the union to keep control of the docks.

He(?) should have! There are other reasons, as well, to believe the killer was an amateur. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a murder mystery. This was another little practice piece with that idea in mind. I thought I might, one of these days, write another version in which the murder was committed by a pro. If only I had more hours in a day!
Thanks for reading!

I really enjoy the calm tone and the matter-of-fact details. I also love that you and your husband discuss murder and mayhem… a great way to keep a marriage interesting, obviously. 😀

Hehe. I wish I had recorded some of our conversations over the years; they get reeeaaallly weird. He’s a great, extra source of experience and knowledge for my writing. I bug him for shooting details, for example. I’m glad you liked the style since I don’t know how else to deliver blood and murder than to just say it. Thanks for reading and commenting. I love the feedback.

I know this type of conversation about breaking necks, cutting throats, stabbing… writing stuff gives you weird topics to talk about. Your story was brutal and fun. Gloves, I say, always wear gloves.

Assassination is like anything else – it takes time to hone those skills. I have no doubt there will be a next time, and by then the assassin will have a better grasp on the finer details of hiding bodies and murder weapons.

I’m like that, always forgetting to wear rubber gloves, or not considering how to dispose of the evidence prior to the event. That’s why I’d never make it as a plumber.

He was a cold character. It sounds like he maybe should have done a bit more planning for his 50,000. The blood will find him out, I think.

As long as he doesn’t lead them back to his employers, I imagine they’ll still consider the money well-spent.

A feelingless murderer,
who takes a life
With the sharpest of knife.
For a coin a note
a slash of a throat.
As long as the dues are paid
There is no mess made
He won’t care his pocket is full,
His thirst satiated with a cull.
